SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A bill filed ahead of next year’s legislative session offers public school teachers a bonus to help raise a school’s failing grade by at least one letter each year.
According to House Bill 42 introduced by Democrat Miguel Garcia, schools rated ‘D’ or ‘F’ in the last school year would be eligible.
Teachers who are rated as highly effective or exemplary can apply for positions.
If accepted they would get $3,000 on top of their salary.
The bill says it’s to help schools raise the school’s grade by at least one letter each year until an ‘A’ is achieved.
Teachers would be evaluated every year.
The money would come from appropriations, gifts, grants and donations.
The program expires in the 2028 and 2029 school year.
